This session will be and introduction to the Alexandria Public Schools New Teacher Induction Program. The program was implemented at Alexandria Public Schools nearly 20 years ago and although it keeps evolving, the basic structure has remained constant. While empathy guides a lot of what we do in education, it is typically not an intentional and distinct part of our work. With increased work around innovation and design, however, empathy is making its way into our playbook! This past year, district leaders took part in the "Shadow a Student Challenge" (https://www.shadowastudent.org/).
We also created "empathy tours" as a part of our Innovation Program Idea Workshops. To address social-emotional learning in the classroom, we created professional development opportunities throughout the year for staff that provided resources around empathy in the classroom. These are steps toward intentionally growing our understanding of empathy and discovering how it can impact our work. During this session, we will share our experiences and resources in order to provide you with a starting point for exploring this topic.

In this session, learn how instructional coaches in District 206 developed a coaching cohort model that integrated true instructional coaching and teacher evaluation using the Danielson framework. Understand five characteristics of an effective coaching cohort: overarching topic for deep study, professional development, collaboration, gradual release of responsibility, and data collection. Examples illustrate elementary literacy topics, but the concepts are applicable to all grades and subjects.
